Caring for your Furniture & Lighting

Timber Furniture

The Dane Craft Modern Furniture range encompasses a beautiful selection of timber types, showcasing stunning colour and textural variation from piece to piece. The natural qualities of timber mean that each item is individual and unique. No two pieces of timber are the same and will vary in their naturally occurring qualities including knots, woodgrains, colour, texture, and surface markings. The colour, depth, and tone of timber will vary between pieces, and with time and exposure to light, will continue to develop as the timber ages. Owning a piece from Dane Craft Modern Furniture that has been meticulously crafted from a beautiful slab of natural timber is truly special, and certainly an item of furniture that will endure and be passed through the generations of your family.

Your timber furniture requires love and care. We recommend the following:

  • Regular dusting with a lint-free soft cloth or a light feather duster will avoid a build-up of dust, preventing the surface of your timber from dulling over time.
  • Applying a light amount of Gilly’s Carnauba Polish provides a protective layer and moisturises your timber. Gently buff the surface in the direction of the wood grain with a soft lint-free cloth every 3 to 6 months, or as necessary. A light application of a non-silicone polish can be used in place of Gilly’s products. Always spot test products in an inconspicuous area before full application.
  • In the event of a spill, attend to it immediately, particularly oily compounds, alcohol, or acidic beverages. The longer a spill remains on the timber surface unattended, the more likely it is to potentially damage your piece. Soak up the spill and dry with a clean, absorbent cloth. Ensure you do not rub the spill when cleaning, instead soak up the spill using a blotting motion, and then pat or blot dry with a clean cloth.
  • Timber products should not be placed in a position of harsh exposure to direct sunlight, near radiators, air conditioning vents, humidifiers, or a fireplace. Such exposure may cause your timber to dry and crack.
  • Under no circumstances should an abrasive, acidic or silicone cleaner be used. This will immediately damage your timber product. Non-silicone cleaners such as Gilly’s products are the best way to care for your timber furniture.
  • To protect your timber use of coasters, placemats, and/or a tablecloth for everyday use, particularly under cold, hot, or damp objects.
  • Avoid leaving placemats or décor objects on your table permanently to reduce the risk of shadows and marks being left on the timber. Both natural and artificial lighting can alter the tone of exposed surfaces over time. Rotate items left on your timber furniture regularly to ensure even colour change.
  • To avoid scratches to your timber furniture, take care when placing items with hard or sharp edges and corners on your timber furniture.
  • When using any products on your timber furniture to clean or maintain, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Gilly’s Products can be purchased through our website under Waxes & Polishes.

Marble Furniture

Marble is a natural material that must be treated with utmost care. Our coffee and consoles tables that feature marble tops are all lightly polished and sealed to ensure the organic beauty of the stone is not lessened. Due to its porous nature, it is essential that the marble is cared for and cleaned quickly should a spill occur.

The following tips can help you care for your marble furniture and add years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • For routine cleaning, opt to use a dry soft cloth or feather duster to wipe over the surface, this will help remove the everyday dirt and dust build up.
  • Ensure the placement of your marble furniture is not in a position of harsh exposure to direct sunlight, near radiators, air conditioning vents, humidifiers, or a fireplace.
  • In the event of a spill, clean instantly with a damp soft cloth and if necessary natural soap. Do not use detergent, chemical, abrasive, acidic or vinegar-based cleaners. Marble is porous and all these cleaners can destroy your marble surface.
  • Gilly’s Carnauba Polish is an effective natural product that provides an extra layer of protection to porous Marble Surfaces.
  • To further ensure maximum protection of your marble in everyday use, try to use coasters or mats under cold, hot, or damp objects. Be careful to avoid condensation under coasters, drinks or pot plants used on your marble surface. Liquid that sits on the surface of your marble for an extended period can destroy the surface.
  • Avoid direct alcohol or beverage contact with the surface. Glasses or bottles left directly on the marble may cause permanent damage to the surface.
  • Use felt pads or mats under vases or décor items to ensure the marble surface does not scratch.
  • Placemats, décor objects, or anything left permanently on the marble surface should be regularly moved and rotated.
  • Take care when consuming acidic beverages near your marble furniture. This includes fruit juice, specifically orange or lemon, soft drinks, and wine. Clean any spills immediately; do not allow them to sit on the surface of your marble furniture.
  • A marble cleaner is recommended for maintenance. There are many products on the market suitable to care for your marble, such as Gilly’s Carnauba Polish.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Powder coated Steel

Steel is a wonderfully versatile material that is highly durable, easy to clean and provides a trendy industrial edge to your space. All steel products within Dane Craft’s Furniture range are finished with a powder-coated paint.

The following tips can help you care for your steel furniture:

  • Steel furniture is not recommended for outdoor use and may spot rust when exposed to outdoor elements. Furthermore, the powder coated paint can wear easily when exposed to outdoor conditions affecting the overall look and colour of the furniture.
  • It is crucial that your steel furniture is regularly cleaned to prevent dirt and grime build up. Dirt and grime that sits on the surface of your steel furniture can affect the integrity of the powder coating. When cleaning, do so with a soft, clean damp cloth. If required, use a mild detergent and soft bristle brush. Rinse clean immediately after cleaning, and dry completely with a separate soft, clean cloth.
  • Do not use harsh abrasive cleaners or steel wool to clean your steel furniture. Doing so may scratch and damage the powder coating.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Rattan

Rattan is a strong natural material that is a popular and stylish choice for chairs and stools. It is naturally cool, comfortable, and durable, requiring minimal care:

The following tips can help you care for your rattan furniture adding years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • Regularly wipe down your rattan seat with a dry soft cloth or dusting wand to help prevent dirt and dust build up on or between the rattan weaving. Where required, you may vacuum your rattan seat but do so with care and if possible, without the brush attachment to avoid any potential damage.
  • Avoid moisture and liquid as much as possible in everyday use as well as when cleaning, as the rattan may absorb the moisture and in turn will affect its appearance, feel and overall quality.
  • Attend to spills immediately. Do not rub liquids or spills into the rattan, always blot clean.
  • In the event that water is definitely required to clean a spill, do so with a soft damp cloth in the direction of the weaving.
  • For extra protection, use seat cushions when the chairs are in use, particularly for children.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Be careful not to have sharp objects or pets’ claws near the rattan as this can cause fraying, tears or loosening of the rattan.

Velvet

Purchasing furniture with a velvet component is a wonderful way to add colour and texture to your space.

The following tips can help you care for your velvet furniture adding years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • Velvet as a material is prone to pressure marking. Ensure you do not leave heavy items resting on your velvet furniture for an extended period of time as it can cause indentation. Should this occur, pressure marks can be removed by brushing the affected area, or light steaming.
  • For general cleaning of your velvet furniture use a soft bristled brush, brushing in the direction of the nap of the fabric. Alternatively, vacuuming the fabric with an upholstery attachment is also suitable.
  • To help prevent wrinkles in your velvet pieces, in particular velvet cushions, it is advisable to shake, turn and move them regularly to avoid long term creases which can be harder to remove.
  • In the event of an accidental spill on your velvet furniture, attend to it immediately. Avoid rubbing the affected area and instead blot lightly with a dry cloth. Ensure not to damage the weave by applying too much pressure when blotting.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Avoid placing your velvet furniture in direct sunlight as this may cause fading.
  • Do not position your furniture too close to heaters, fireplaces, or air conditioners.
  • Sharp objects including pet claws may cause fabric to pull, tear or fray.

Wool

Wool is an excellent choice for furniture as it is durable, easy to clean and eternally stylish. The following tips can help you care for your wool furniture adding years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • For general and routine cleaning, a soft bristled brush in one direction using short strokes will prevent dust or dirt build up. Alternatively, occasional use of a vacuum with upholstery attachment will also do the trick.
  • Wool as a material is innately prone to pilling, which refers to the development of rounded bunches of fibres that occur from regular use. Pilling can be mostly avoided by gently brushing down your wool furniture with a soft bristle brush intermittently. A small amount of pills can easily be removed by hand. Alternatively, in the event of severe piling there are many alternate products available on the market such as pill fluff removers.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
  • In the event of a spill, attend to it immediately as the longer a spill is left the more likely it is to leave stains. Soak up any liquid or solid spills with a soft absorbent cloth, always blotting lightly instead of rubbing.
  • Avoid placing your wool furniture in close proximity to any severe elements such as, heaters, fireplaces, air conditioners, water or harsh directed sunlight for a long period of time.
  • Be vigilant about any sharp objects that may penetrate the fabric such as pet claws.

Brass

Brass is a highly versatile material that is very durable, easy to clean and timeless in style. The following tips can help you care for your brass furniture adding years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • For general and routine cleaning, ensure your brass furniture is dusted regularly with a dry cloth or dusting wand to prevent dirt and dust build up which can affect the overall shine.
  • If more thorough cleaning is required on your brass furniture, general care advice is to simply soak the piece in lukewarm water with a small amount of gentle soap for 2-5 minutes, when finished gently wash the soap off and dry using a soft cloth. Ensure you dry entirely with your cloth, so you don’t leave any wet spots.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Do not use steel wool or harsh abrasive cleaners that are not specified for brass furniture. Doing so may scratch and damage the brass.

Reconstituted Stone

Reconstituted stone is a predominately maintenance free material that is highly durable, stylish and easy to clean. The following tips can help you care for your reconstituted stone adding years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • For routine or general cleaning, dusting or wiping down your reconstituted stone surface regularly with a dry cloth will prevent dust and dirt build up, this also ensures the material does not become dull overtime.
  • In the event of a spill, attend to it immediately by drying with a clean cloth. Due to reconstituted stone being hard and non-porous, using soap or mild detergent with water will typically suffice in keeping the surface clean and clear after spills. Ensure to dry completely after cleaning as to prevent water markings.
  • Avoid using harsh abrasive materials such as steel wool or cleaning products with strong solvents and chemicals as this can damage the physical properties of the stone.
  • Reconstituted stone can handle heat, but only to a certain degree. So when placing down a hot pot or heated glass, ensure use of a placemat or heat pad between the stone and the item of direct heat. It will not scorch the stone however it can damage the physical properties.
  • To protect the reconstituted stone as much as possible, ensure use of coasters, placemats and/or tablecloths when in everyday use, most especially under cold, hot, or damp objects.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Outdoor Furniture

Selecting furniture suitable for your outdoor space means considering the material construct and whether it is suitable to withstand the Australian elements. All outdoor furniture within the Dane Craft Furniture range is constructed from UV Stabilised Polypropylene, and HPL Compact Laminate. These products are designed by the European outdoor furniture brand, Siesta and all come with a five-year warranty.

The following tips can help you care for your outdoor furniture adding years of life, whilst enjoying it every day:

  • Where possible store in an undercover, dry outdoor area out of direct sunlight.
  • Clean your outdoor furniture regularly to prevent the build-up of dirt and grime. Use a soft bristle brush or cloth, and a mild soap and water. Rinse with a low-pressure hose and dry completely to avoid potential water marks.
  • Allowing mass amounts of water to sit on your outdoor furniture for extended periods of time can cause oxidisation on your outdoor furniture surfaces.
  • For a more thorough clean there are many products on the market suitable to care for your outdoor furniture, we like Gumption Paste available at various stores.
  • A cover can be used over your outdoor furniture to prevent excess exposure to environmental elements.
  • Be sure to wipe dry after rain or cleaning.
  • Should you decide to use any alternative protection products or cleaners, always test the solution on a small, concealed area first and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
